Facebook is planning to buy fake news site theOnion.com for $1 Billion, DelhiPress insider John Doe reports. It had been pretty clear for some time that Facebook had an interest in buying theOnion.com.
“We could use more fake news items on our feeds,” explained a Facebook executive. This executive has no name.
“For the first time in the history of Facebook, we were able to make a difference,” admitted the executive, excitedly. He was referring to complains that the fake news feeds on Facebook changed the outcome of the 2016 US election. “We don’t verify all the Facebook posts and statues. Not everything there is backed by facts, and honestly, we don’t really care.” revealed the executive.
He may be right. Statuses, such as, “Having fun with friends!” can easily be questioned. There usually is no evidence to back it up and chances are, it may not even be true. Fake stories from theOnion.com will encourage users to visit Facebook more often, post more fake stuff, brag and do shameless self promotions.
“If you watch C-SPAN, stay there. If you would like to read stories and opinions, welcome to Facebook!” executive makes it very clear, “Stories from theOnion will teach people how satire works. Our primary focus now is educating people about the difference between real and fake. Our goal is to make it obvious for the users that it is ALL fake. TheOnion is just a beginning.”
