Two Protest Leaders Sent to Tihar — and a Bigger Fight Over Jantar Mantar
The Story — A Delhi Special Executive Magistrate has sent Cockroach Janta Party co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to Tihar Jail for five days of judicial custody, after their arrest on Tuesday for allegedly entering Jantar Mantar in violation of prohibitory orders.
The site was recently denotified as the capital’s designated protest venue. A third leader, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on a personal peace bond. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticised the jailing, the BJP has hit back, and the Supreme Court has issued notice on the denotification itself.
Student and left groups lead with the crackdown itself. The arrests are framed as one more instance of dissent being policed — and the denotification of Jantar Mantar as the deliberate shrinking of Delhi’s democratic space, decided without public debate.
Wire coverage sticks to the sequence: alleged violation of prohibitory orders, arrest, production before a court, five days’ custody. It records the denotification dispute and the Supreme Court’s involvement without characterising either camp.
Government-aligned coverage leads with the violation: the protesters entered a prohibited area after the site’s denotification, and custody followed due process. The BJP’s fire is aimed at Congress for championing the arrested while demanding order elsewhere.
The Bottom Line — The fight is bigger than two arrests: it is over whether Delhi keeps a sanctioned protest space at all. Watch the Supreme Court hearing, and whether the denotification itself is challenged.
